How do I know when it’s time for a fit?

Recommendations are only valid for the day the horse was presented for the saddle fit. Any changes in diet, exercise, injury, change of season etc. may impact the fit. It’s recommended that saddle fits are done every 6 months (new saddles need a refit after 3 months). Please ensure the saddle is always placed in the correct position on the horse’s back.  If your horse is showing any of the following signs, it’s time to consider a saddle fit.

5 Horse Behavioural Checks

  1. Does the horse wince when you touch her/his back, or try to kick, bite or is generally not happy when you groom her/him or saddle him up?

  2. Is your horse cold backed when mounted?

  3. Does this horse generally resist your aids or does go with false collection?

  4. Does your horse have muscle loss, dry spots, broken or white hairs?

  5. Has it been more than 6 months since your last saddle fit?

5 Saddle Checks

  1. Does your saddle tip you off balance either forwards, backwards, to one side or does the saddle just not feel right?

  2. Is there less than 2 fingers clearance along saddle panels to his spine?

  3. Does the saddle seem to have uneven pressure through the panels down behind your horse's shoulder or along his back?

  4. Is your saddle new and has not been fitted?

  5. Has it been more than 6 months since your last saddle fit?

5 General Checks

  1. Has your horse recently come into work?

  2. Has your horse's diet recently changed?

  3. Has your horse recently recovered/recovering from an injury or illness?

  4. Is your horse new?

  5. Are you sharing a saddle with other horses?

The Saddle Up 10 Step Saddle Fit Check

Do I have to pay online and what does this include?

Yes, payment is required at time of booking to complete the appointment process.  The upfront payment covers the fixed appointment cost and includes 30km travel.  Further variable costs are payable at the fit for adjustments such as gullet changes and flocking made on the day and any extra kms travelled which will be communicated with you as part of your booking confirmation.

How much is travel?

Every Saddle Fit Booking includes a standard 30km travel fee.  For distances greater than this, travel is charged $1 per km depending of the distance from your local Horseland store or the fit before. Your saddle fitter will be able to confirm the travel charge as part of the booking confirmation process.

How much are adjustments?

All adjustments are variable costs that are charged at the fit, over the up-front booking fee which includes the training and expertise of the fitter and average travel distance of 30km.  This ensures that you pay only for the adjustments that are required after the saddle fit is complete.  For each Horse and Saddle, adjustment prices are based on the average retail price of saddle gullets and inserts and flock.

To get the most of your Saddle Fit which assesses the overall fit considering that combination of horse and rider interfacing with the saddle, it’s strongly recommended that the horse is ridden with the normal rider on the horse.  Where there are cases that the rider does not want to or cannot ride on the day, you will be required to acknowledge of the limitation by electing not to ride during the saddle fit.  In these cases, any concerns with the fit within the few weeks following the fit that may require a re-fit will be at your expense.
